Long thought to be the next best winegrowing region in Spain, second only to Rioja, Penedés is one of the oldest viticultural areas in the country. Being at the crossroads of the ancient world, the wines of the Penedés region were in high demand by the people of the Mediterranean and today, all over the world. Barcelona, the cultural center of Penedés, built by the Romans because of its strategic proximity to the rest of the Mediterranean, continues to be the busiest port in the Mediterranean Sea today. This is also the heart of Catalunya, an area where all communication is in both Castellano and the native Catalan language. The Catalan people are very proud of their difference, but when we were there a couple of years ago I started referring to it as "Cata-lunacy."
The name of this wine is Can Feixes (cahn FAY-shuss), Catalan for "the Feixes family." When we think of Penedés wines, we usually think of Cava, the sparkling wine of the region. Well this Blanc Seleccio is a still version of the classic Cava combination - Parellada (40%), Macabeo (34%) - with the very clever addition of Chardonnay (20%) for structure and Malvasia (6%) for luscious fruit. All of the wine is made in temperature-controlled stainless steel fermentation vessels and receives no oak aging at all. Then it's bottled in a stylish, slender flute bottle ready for you to chill it and enjoy it. Its relatively low (12%) alcohol and clean dryness make this an excellent wine with mild cheeses, salads or seafood.
