When we opened Wine & Words in April of 2002, we were gambling that there were other people in the region who would enjoy a source of great wines at affordable prices, as well as an eclectic selection of used books and specialty foods. Turns out we were right.
In addition to bringing items not ordinarily found in our region, we have met many wonderful people, both our coastal neighbors and those who are "passing through" or "just visiting." People are delighted to find our little shop and browse among all the surprises we have.
In November of 2004, we completed a major expansion project, opening The Back Bay Cafe and expanding the "Words" part to include the stock of the Bookhaven book store when its proprietors retired.
Our building was erected in 1905 by George Windley and was originally known as the Windley Store. George's daughter Mary grew up in the store and when she and "Shorty" Willis were married, they operated the store as the Willis Store. We were proud to have Mary Windley Willis, at age 97, cut the ribbon for the grand opening of our new venture.
In the Spring of 2004, we began a substantial renovation/addition. While keeping the character of the old store, we added a modern commercial kitchen, a new bookstore area, indoor cafe seating for 40 people and an outdoor deck seating area.
The new section is 2 1/2 feet higher than the old part, which got flooded in Hurricanes Floyd and Isabel. The entrance is through the old store, and all is handicap accessible via a ramp from the rear parking area.
In fair weather, there are always a couple of rocking chairs on the front porch...so come by and set a spell.
We're on Business US 264 in Belhaven, just two blocks from the waterfront.
